'Obika wins Trust Breakthrough Award' posted by Paul Smith on 18/05/2009

Jonathan Obika is presented with the 2009 Spurs Trust Breakthrough Award

Spurs Trust board member Howard Sherman (on the right) presented the 2009 Fred Dowry Breakthrough award on behalf of all Spurs Trust members on the pitch at White Hart Lane after the last home game of the season against Manchester City.

The recipient (on the left) was Jonathan Obika, aged just 18, who made his first team debut for Spurs in the UEFA Cup at NEC Nijmegen, where he came on as an 83rd minute substitute. Jonathan then made a full debut in the home game against Shaktar Donetsk and excited many fans who had not seen him playing and scoring at Academy and Reserve level this season.

Jonathan scored 11 Academy League goals, and also scored 5 Youth Cup goals and one goal for the Reserves. Jonathan's season was capped when he impressed on loan at Yeovil, scoring 4 goals in 10 games, helping to assure their League 1 status.

The award is given to the young player who has made his first team debut at Tottenham, and in the eyes of Trust members has made the biggest impression. Other contenders this year were John Bostock, Ryan Mason, Dean Parrett and Ben Alnwick.

The Breakthrough Award is named in honour of Fred Dowry, who was a long-standing and loyal Spurs supporter at home and away, who sadly passed away when he was en route to an FA Cup game at Manchester city in January 2004. Previous recipients have been Rohan Ricketts, Stephen Kelly, Aaron Lennon, Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O'Hara
