| 'Latest reply to Trust from Daniel Levy' posted by THST on 24/01/2004 | Daniel Levy has replied to the letter sent earlier this week by Trust chairman, Daniel Wynne.
We will take up our right to of reply, but we will wait until the transfer window has closed. The text of the letter appears below.
"Dear Daniel
Firstly can I say how delighted I was to see and hear the support you and your members gave the Club in respect of the recent Share Offer plan. As I underlined during our recent conversation, it was vital that we secured flexible finance for the Club so that we could take advantage of both the current and future transfer windows.
In response to your letter of 19 January, I did, indeed, say to you when we spoke earlier in the year that I hoped for ‘major changes’ to the squad during January. I have to tell you now that several factors are making our plans difficult. Firstly, very few clubs are prepared to sell their quality players – it is January, with little time or activity for Clubs to replace key players. Secondly, due to our perceived financial ability we are seeing generous deals rejected and over-inflated price tags. It also follows that the player in question must be 100% committed to the move.
You should be in no doubt as to our determination to bring quality players to the Club. We have made market rate offers and, in some cases, above market rate offers. However, as I have said before, we shall not make the mistake that other clubs have made of attempting to please fans and attempt to buy quick success at transfers prices and salaries which could potentially put the long-term stability of the Club into jeopardy.
On the managerial front, we are progressing discussions and, as I announced at the AGM, David Pleat and Chris Hughton remain in charge of the First Team until the summer.
United support from our fans plays a fundamental and vital role in the confidence of the team and management and once again I should like to ask you to pass on my thanks to all your members and, indeed, all our fans who fill our stadium both in presence and passion.
I am sure we shall talk again in due course.
Yours sincerely
DANIEL LEVY
Chairman of Tottenham Hotspur"
